The quake happened in Avignon just after my forefinger touched the dark purple and violet cardboard LP sleeve. Immediately my eyes recognized Pete Burns' face : yes, it was Dead or Alive's most famous album : YOUTHQUAKE (the title is printed with white uppercase letters on the sleeve). Memories coming from my teenage sprang up to my mind ; was I about to buy this second hand vinyl LP ?
No !
Notwithstanding I was enjoying observing the mild and dark colours on the front side. Then I turned it the other side to read informations on the verso and, suddenly, I felt like hanging on the shelves whilst the walls of the record shop were tumbling down ! :
This album was produced and made by Stock, Aitken and Waterman ! NOOOOOO !
I ignored this trio started its career so early in the eighties with this band whose spastic and synthetic sound distinguished them from the other music bands thanks to its talented and glamorous singer, Pete Burns.
Is it a shame ? Who the fuck cares about that ? I must admit I liked numerous songs and artists produced by this trio. But I was aware of which singer or band was directed by these three guys : Rick Asley (yum-yum!), Donna Summer, Samantha Fox, etc.
On the other hand, I feel like having been cheated in 1985, first because I was young, secondly because Dead or Alive's beat and style couldn't be Stock, aitken and Waterman's product.
As far as I know, Pete Burns is his own product ! He has been the only one, once upon a time, capable of making a subtl and successful mix between a gothic look and a languishing slut !
